Being in the Practice
During a recent class a student asked a very typical question ”what should I be feeling?!” It was obvious she was looking for that physical sensation of a deep stretch. I thought for a momment and decided not to take her deeper in the pose instead, to help clarify that the practice of yoga is more than the physical sensation of deep stretches. We too often tend to come to yoga from a place of doing rather than a place of being. What does that mean? Well, think about this. When we begin to practice yoga many of us start our practice with a midset of just exercise. We bring with us expectaions, jugement, questions, evaluations, etc. We soon realize that there is much more to this yoga stuff than we realized. Expecially, when we stop coming into our practice with the attachment of specific outcomes. Instead we practice being in the presence of the experience unfolding naturally. With this approach, we then can become more intuned with ourselves and realize that there is another tier to our yoga practice that can have a profound effect both on and off the mat.
